News from Year 5: Needs and Wants

This semester, Year 5 students have been delving into Economics and Business as part of their Unit of Inquiry. The Unit began with the “Needs and Wants” game, where the girls explored the differences between essential needs and personal wants through an engaging activity. This game aimed to help students understand the basic necessities of life and consider the importance of sustainability and resource management.

To conclude the Unit, our students will plan and present a mini business. This project involves conducting market research, designing business cards and a website, calculating profit and loss, and ultimately presenting and selling their goods or services at our annual Barbreck Fundraising Day. Selling their products at the market is a highly anticipated event for our Year 5 Cohort, offering a chance to showcase their creativity and enjoy the experience.

Charlotte Rose 5A:During our mini businesses, I have loved being able to work with girls across the two classes. I have learned that you have to think about what people will want, not what you want to make.”

Sophia Magennis 5A:I have learned that everyone has different ideas. To be a good leader, you need to be able to understand and interpret the different ideas that people have. I have liked working with other people and seeing how they think of other things.”

Isla Goddard 5J: “Something that I have loved during mini businesses has been working in a group to create our name and logo. Something that I have learned is how to manage businesses with profit, costs of items, and loss.”

Miranda Jie 5J: I have loved that you can pick your own business idea. We have designed our own logos. I have learned how to manage the different things you need in a business, like profit, designing, and ideas.”
