The Success of Our Mobile-Free Focus Program

At the start of this year, we introduced the Mobile-Free Focus Program, utilising Yondr pouches to create a distraction-free environment for our students in Years 7–9. I am delighted to share that this transition has been overwhelmingly positive, with both students and teachers embracing the change.

Each morning, students securely lock their phones in their pouches at the start of Period 1, and they remain stored in their locker until the end of the school day. This simple yet effective system has been met with great success. Students have found the pouches easy to use and appreciate the sense of control it brings—there is no need for self-monitoring or the ongoing struggle against temptation.

Some of the comments from students include:

YEAR 7

It’s been really good. I don’t really need it during the day anyway. The Head of Year lets us open it up when we need to, which is helpful.

When I’m at home, I’m on it all the time. But here, I’m not tempted by it. It’s better for making friends too. We can talk and no one is just sitting there on their phone not talking to anyone else.

YEAR 8

Sometimes, I don’t even bring my phone to school anymore.

At the end of the day, when I turn my phone back on, there are heaps of messages, and it takes ages for them to download.

YEAR 9

At first, I didn’t want the pouches. But in the end, it hasn’t been a big change for me. It has been hard not being able to keep track of time, but aside from that, it’s been ok.

Last year, I used to check my phone every recess and lunchtime, but now I don’t even think about it.

Teachers have also reported a noticeable shift in classroom dynamics. With phones no longer a competing force for attention, students are more engaged, present, and focused. Additionally, the impact extends beyond the classroom; lunchtime interactions have become more vibrant, with students engaging in meaningful conversations, collaborating on challenges, and strengthening social connections. This, coupled with an upgrade to the furniture and layout of the Clocktower, has brought a renewed energy and sense of calm to this area of the school.

We recognise that this shift required an adjustment period, and we sincerely appreciate the support of our students, staff, and families in making it a smooth process. As always, we value your feedback and encourage open dialogue. If you have any thoughts or questions about the program, please do not hesitate to reach out to myself or Robert Marshall. Together, we will continue to build and foster an environment in which students can thrive.
