Starlab – Portable Planetarium

Last week, our Prep to Year 5 Barbreck girls had a very special treat…a visit from Starlab Victoria with their Science Discovery Dome, otherwise known as a portable planetarium.

The sessions were interactive and immersive, and the girls were totally engaged with the 360° digital projections. At the conclusion of the session, the presenter showed the girls the night sky as they would see it at home – the stars, planets, and major constellations. It was so cool!!!!

Look out for Jupiter and Saturn in our sky at the moment.

Comments from the girls:

“Did you know the moon is over 150 degrees during the day but colder than the coldest place on earth during the nighttime?!”

“Wow, I didn’t know the moon had no air and that is why there is no blue sky like we have!!”

“The best part was lying down.”

“It takes eight minutes for light to get to earth from the sun, I thought it was instant like messaging!”

“There was a lunar eclipse on the 8 November – a red moon!”

“It was scary when the asteroid flew right into us and then over us.”

“We can see Jupiter and Saturn in the sky at the moment. They are the first lights to appear in the sky as the sun goes down… even before the stars show up!”
