From the Nicholas Library

As an information hub and shared learning space, the Nicholas Library plays a unique role in our School. Importantly, it plays a critical part as a non-hierarchical environment that brings people together. Whether for private study, one-on-one advisory sessions between students and staff, Independent Learning Tutorials, or to provide a safe and comfortable place to retreat into a good book, our Library aims to be a versatile and welcoming learning space for all.

Book Club Trivia Quiz

Throughout this year, Book Club has continued to thrive, both onsite and online, enabling keen readers to meet fortnightly to discuss themes, characters and issues in our selected novels. In addition to sharing a love of reading, Book Club provides opportunities for students to delve into genres they may not normally choose for themselves, and to connect with peers in other Year levels.

One of the highlights of Term 2 was the visit from author, Anna Ciddor. Speaking about

her latest time-slip novel set in Roman Gaul, her talk and workshop were relevant to both the Year 7 English and History curricula. Students enjoyed learning about the research and writing skills involved in producing an historical novel, and immersed themselves in games and activities that were popular in Ancient Roman times.

It was also a great pleasure to join with the English Faculty in designing the new Year 10 Extended Investigation unit in Term 3, which aimed to develop students’ independent learning and critical thinking. The strength of the Nicholas Library’s digital resource collection proved invaluable and, along with introducing students to the content and functions of this collection, we provided tuition and guidance to help the girls become broader and more discerning users of digital information.

More than just a building, the varied uses of the Nicholas Library recognise the fundamental importance of libraries as collaborative learning environments. The Nicholas Library staff have taken great pride and pleasure in continuing to help our School community make the most of our wonderful learning resources and beautiful library space.
