Boarding – Student Reflections

Our Boarding Co-Captains, Gabi Fellows and Megan Ong share their reflections about boarding at Illawarra.

Starting at St Catherine’s at the beginning of 2018, we have been a part of the Boarding House life for nearly four years.

As expected, it was definitely different to what we were used to at home, so it took us both a while to adjust. However, throughout our first year having a big house filled with all different aged girls from different backgrounds and cultures, made it that much easier to settle in as we had a support team through every high and low.

While Illawarra has been about making connections and contributing to our tight knitted support system, we have also been encouraged to become independent and rely on ourselves and our abilities often, to ensure that we will have confidence in ourselves after we leave School.

Over the years we have grown with all of the girls around us and watched the older girls in awe of what they were accomplishing. Little did we know that we would be overcoming those obstacles and achieving those same goals as we progressed through the School in their footsteps.

We think that the connection that we have with all different year levels influenced our desire to become Boarding Co-Captains as we were acutely aware of what had worked well in the past, what the younger girls relied on the older girls for and what was needed for the Boarding House’s culture to continue to develop.

We welcome Term 2 and we look forward to enjoying another successful and fun term.
