House Debating: Davis V Beaulieu Blair

‘That playing competitive sport does more harm than good in primary school.’

This was the proposition that kicked off the 2023 House Debating Competition in Barbreck.

The atmosphere was tense, and the debaters had the audience of fellow Year 6 debaters and Year 10 coaches completely absorbed.

Arguing on the affirmative side were Davis House (Charlotte Morris, Scarlett Bertalli and Imogen Herron). They were challenged by Beaulieu Blair (Carys Dreaver, Ellyse Buckley, and Bella Sullivan). Debaters were judged on their content, delivery, and teamwork. The adjudicator was looking for well-constructed arguments, that were supported by relevant evidence, and delivered with conviction.

The debate was a closely contested affair, but in the end, Davis emerged as the winners.

Davis argued that competition causes unnecessary and potentially damaging stress, can lead to injuries, a poor attitude, fear of losing and loss of enjoyment. The Davis Team remained composed and delivered their arguments with confidence.

Debating in Barbreck is conducted in a supportive and encouraging environment. Beaulieu Blair put up an excellent performance and was commended for their research and teamwork.

If this first round is an indication of the standard of debating in Barbreck for the 2023 season, we are really excited for the next debate when Langley Templeton and Holmes Kilbride have their turn.
