Speaking Up and Setting Boundaries

During our specialist Health class this week, our Barbreck students actively engaged in activities designed to cultivate a deeper understanding of empathy, emotions, and the fundamental principle of respect.

These activities aimed to foster a heightened sense of awareness and compassion towards others, enhancing their interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence.

By participating in these activities, students were able to broaden their understanding of others’ experiences, fostering a greater sense of empathy and compassion.

The girls learnt the importance of recognising and validating the emotions of others, irrespective of individual differences or personal circumstances. Through the promotion of a culture rooted in respect, we underscored the significance of treating others with kindness, understanding, and acceptance.

These classroom discussions also aligned with a fundraising and awareness campaign on bullying and the importance of kindness, initiated by five of our Year 10 students over the past two weeks. To read more click here.

Another crucial topic discussed during our classes was personal boundaries. We emphasised the fundamental right of every individual to establish and communicate their own limits.

Students were encouraged to reflect on their personal boundaries and consider the factors that contribute to their comfort or discomfort in various situations. This process helped them understand the importance of personal bodily autonomy and the necessity of respecting the boundaries of others.

We encourage parents to continue these discussions at home to reinforce the importance of body safety and to help empower their children to protect themselves. Something as simple as starting a conversation on a body safety topic can help create a safe space for open dialogue and allow families to learn from each other.
