Paper Chains of Hope and Togetherness

During the first two weeks of May, Year 10 students Arabella, Sophie, Annabel, Chamonix, and Natalie joined together to raise awareness on bullying, strengthen kindness in the community and fundraise to support Dolly’s Dream.

Fundraising in Barbreck with all proceeds proudly supporting Dolly’s Dream

The five students organised a week-long fundraiser in Barbreck where each class was encouraged to fill a jar with coins, with the winning class receiving a group prize. Barbreck students also participated in a paper chain activity. The activity encouraged students to work collaboratively as a group and instil a sense of unity. The paper chains signified a tangible representation of connection and friendship between students as they linked one paper chain to another.

“We wanted to lead by example in extending a helping hand to the younger students who would be more susceptible and engaged in learning about the severity of bullying amongst their peers. We also wanted to share information on proactive ways to build a solid foundation of kindness and care for one another. We hope to make an impact through this fundraiser to spread a valuable message that students can carry throughout their lives,” Arabella explained.

“St Catherine’s has always been dedicated to fostering a positive and nurturing environment where we all have access to help whenever needed. Throughout the school year multiple speeches, presentations, and activities have taken place to educate us about bullying. This is why Dolly’s Dream is an incredible charity that the five of us hold dear to our hearts.”

Dolly’s Dream was created by Kate and Tick Everett following the shattering loss of their 14-year-old daughter, Dolly, to suicide, after ongoing bullying. Kate and Tick’s goal is to prevent other families walking this road. They want to change the culture of bullying by addressing the impact of bullying, anxiety, depression, and youth suicide, through education and direct support to young people and families.

National Do It For Dolly Day was held last Friday across Australia with individuals, community groups and schools all raising funds and awareness about bullying. Funds from Do It For Dolly Day are allocated to a number of initiatives including a free mental health support line with trained counsellors.

There is still time to support the girls in their fundraising initiative by visiting their fundraising page DO IT FOR DOLLY FUNDRAISING

Congratulations to Arabella, Sophie, Annabel, Chamonix, and Natalie.
