Connecting with Community to Extend Learning

Our Early Learning Programs are supplemented by opportunities for the children to participate in incursions and excursions. Throughout the year, a selection of experiences are planned within the ELC and in the wider community.

There are times when we invite an expert to come into the Early Learning Centre to implement a workshop with the children where they share their knowledge or resources. This may be a music or drama experience, a workshop on reptiles or Australian animals, or a creative opportunity.

There are also times when the children venture outside of the ELC on an excursion to engage in rich, hands-on learning in the wider community. All these opportunities are carefully designed to connect with and support the children’s current learning and inquiries.

The children in Wattle and Banksia Rooms recently participated in an excursion to the Werribee Open Range Zoo. During this experience the children explored the African River Trail where they were able to observe the gorilla, meerkats, cheetahs, and lions which they have recently been learning about.

The children also spent time listening to the ‘Zookeeper Talks’ about the big cats and lions along the way. They then boarded the Safari Bus where they toured the savannah to engage in an up-close encounter with the rhinoceros, antelopes, camels, ostriches, water buffalo and giraffes. This experience will provide the children with the opportunity to extend and consolidate their learning in relation to animals.

Such experiences provide incredibly rich opportunities to extend the children’s learning, connect with experts and engage with the local community. They expose the children to a range of new and different experiences and help them to make sense of the world in which they live.

Celebrations of Learning

The children in the Early Learning Centre are looking forward to their end of year learning celebrations. Over recent weeks, the children have been reflecting on their year, recording audio and video, collating photographs, creating artwork, and rehearsing songs to include in their celebrations. Each presentation will be a collective celebration of the children’s learning in the ELC this year. The children are excited to be able to share their work with you.

Please note the date below for the specific celebration for your child’s class. These events will be held in the ELC Piazza.
