Year 6 Canberra Reflections

The Year 6 students have recently returned from their Study Tour to Canberra. Students had the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage, and democracy. The highlight for many girls was our visit to Parliament House, where they saw both the House of Representatives and the Senate in action.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government contributed some funding under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the School upon completion of the Study Tour.

Year 6 Reflections

Alexia Chatfield: My favorite activity in Canberra was going to visit Parliament House. We got to do a role play of what politicians do in their day-to-day lives, in both the Senate and the House of Representatives. We also got to visit the fun and exciting Questacon, where we watched science experiments in action and went into the earthquake room. We got to feel a 5.6 magnitude earthquake, it was thrilling. Visiting Canberra was an exciting experience.

Coco Sullivan: Canberra was a great experience for all the Year 6s. We saw lots of important places. My favourite activity was bowling with my friends on our final night in Canberra.

Frankie Lasky: My two highlights were at the AIS and bowling. At the Australian Institute of Sport, we took part in a Sportex session, there were lots of different sporting activities and challenges.

Shuao (Mia) Li: In Canberra, we went to various places including Questacon, the Australian Institute of Sport, and the Australian War Memorial. While visiting Australian Parliament House, I learned that it consisted of the Senate and the House of Representatives, where the chairs were red and green, respectively.

Mia’Chanel Kelly: Our trip to Canberra was very busy and we saw lots of different places. I really enjoyed bowling and visiting Government House. I learnt that the Governor General looks after very important people when they are in Australia, including the Queen.

Coco Lutz: At Parliament House we took part in an education session and we role played passing a bill in the House of Representatives. It was really entertaining. I also loved seeing the Australian Institute of Sport and bowling with my friends.

Isabella Jamieson: It was interesting to see all the different places in Canberra, but my favourite activity was bowling with my friends. I learnt that the Governor General of Australia really has more power than the Prime Minister.

Amelia Hyams: I enjoyed the experience of being away with my friends. It was fun finding out what cabin I was in and spending time with everyone in Year 6. I really enjoyed bowling and being a tourist all over Canberra.

Sin Wai (Agness) Huang: I learnt about how Parliament House runs each day. It was wonderful to see it in action. I really enjoyed seeing all the different places in Canberra and spending time with my friends and shopping at the gift shop.

Xinyi (Isabel) Yang: I enjoyed going to Parliament House and meeting some of the politicians. It was interesting to see parliament in action. Bowling was also a highlight.

Holly Farrer: Canberra was absolutely fantastic, we were lucky enough to see a large number of incredible places, all were terrific. My favourite place was definitely the Australian War Memorial. We got to hear stories from soldiers and nurses who were so brave and caring as they fought for their country risking their own lives, some of which died trying to protect others. They are very honourable people who deserve to be recognised. Canberra was a favourite camp of mine and I don’t think I will ever forget the trip.
