From the Head of Year 8 – A Time to Test the Waters

Learn to Row

Learn to Row is in full swing with 44 Year 8s venturing down to the Yarra River on a Monday or Wednesday afternoon to train.

A sea of pale blue can be seen snaking their way down the river with the Year 8s quickly picking up the rhythm and technique in the boat. After witnessing the incredible efforts of our Senior Rowers at Henley, it is fantastic to see so many girls hopping into the boat and giving it a go.

Rowing is a sport unlike any other where the word ‘Team’ is taken to another level. Each crew member is completely reliant on one another – there are no substitutes but an understanding and commitment to move, train and compete as one. The lessons of patience, resilience, organisation, and grit that can be learnt in this sport are invaluable and set students up well in their studies and life.

The end of the Learn to Row program will culminate in a St Catherine’s mini regatta for all to see. Parents, guardians, and families are invited down to the Yarra on Saturday 10 September from 10.00am to 12.00pm to watch their daughters compete in their first ever regatta.

Though it is not Henley, it is sure to be a fun and exciting event and the first of many. It will be held at Mercantile Rowing Club with a BBQ to finish off the event. Following the Learn to Row program, Year 8s are encouraged to sign up for Junior Rowing commencing in Term 4.

Subject Selection

The Year 8s have recently embarked on the first of many decisions on their journey towards VCE.

The Year 9 Elective program enables students to select not only subjects that interest them, but those they believe will set them up for VCE and their future endeavours.

For our Year 8s it is time to test the waters and try something new. A time to strengthen knowledge in a particular area and find a pathway that suits them as an individual.

With so many electives on offer, students can explore their artistic side, whilst also extending their knowledge with Advanced Science, Australian Politics or Advanced Physical Education.

Moving into Year 9 next year will be a further step in developing your daughter’s independence. The Year 9 wellbeing theme, weEngage, involves students engaging in their own progress as a student, with others at School and the wider community through camps and community service.

Yes, your daughters are growing up quickly, but rest assured they are ready for this next step and excited for the new challenges that lie ahead. They are well supported at School, with a range of staff to help them in taking this next step.
