News from Sport – Hockey Champions

The Senior GSV (Girls Sport Victoria) Hockey Team has capped off an outstanding undefeated season by claiming the GSV Premiership in a terrific display of team first hockey.

After winning their group, they came up against Camberwell Girls Grammar in the semi final at the State Hockey & Netball Centre.

GSV Hockey Premiers 2022

After thunder and lightning during the warm up delayed the game by 20 minutes, St Catherine’s started brilliantly, with Adelaide Mitchell scoring inside the first minute. After playing through a brief hailstorm, more goals came, and they went into halftime with a 5-0 lead. St Catherine’s went on to claim a 10-0 win, securing their place in the grand final against MLC.

The grand final started in a similar fashion to the semi final, with an early goal setting the tone for another dominant performance. We went into half time with a 6-0 lead and with Samantha Love, Phoebe Russell, Katharine Carter, and Lily Taylor leading from the front in the second half, St Catherine’s ended up securing the title with a resounding 11-0 win.

To put this result into context, MLC had not lost the Senior Hockey premiership for more than 10 years, and St Catherine’s had not won a Senior GSV Premiership in any sport for more than six years.

GSV Hockey Premiers 2022

While the team has some incredibly talented individual players, with four players representing Victoria this year, what was evident throughout the season was a selfless approach where everyone contributed to the success of the team. Due to injuries and illness throughout the season, the team was often required to play short of players, which again makes this achievement all the more significant.

A big thank you to Year 12 students Scarlett Davis (Captain), Sarah Pratt and Adelaide Mitchell for their contributions to GSV Hockey during their time at St Catherine’s. All three of the girls have played every year since Year 7.

Congratulations girls, we are enormously proud of your achievements.
