News from Sport – District Soccer and Netball

District Soccer

Our Year 6 Soccer Team ran their legs off in the five games of soccer at Kooyong Park on Wednesday 15 May as part of the District Soccer Carnival.

In our Pool we played Firbank (eventual winners) in our first game and escaped with a comfortable draw. Alie Belan grabbed an early goal to get things moving which gave us confidence for the remaining games.

Game 2 was against Sacre Coeur. We were always in control, winning 2-0. Olivia Batt and Alexia Chatfield were solid in defence, whilst Holly Farrer and Pippa Van der Venne controlled the midfield.

Game 3 was against Gennazano and it took us until the second half to get our noses in front. We then ran out comfortable winners in the end, 2-0. We were beginning to show signs of fatigue and several players needed to be rested. We were able to give our two emergencies, Elise Crosbie-Goold, and Jiali (Erena) Zhu a run in defence.

After two wins and a draw it was onto the semi final game against Loreto for a spot in the final. Despite playing our best game of the day, Loreto was too strong and ran out comfortable 3-0 winners.

Our final game was a play off for outright third place and it was against our arch rival Lauriston. After a quick reference to the Collingwood and Carlton rivalry in the AFL, the girls mustered all their energy, and we grabbed a satisfying 1-0 win. Camilla Aberdeen was busy in the midfield and managed to register 8.2km on her Fitbit for the day. Berry Roberts improved with every game and became a reliable defender.

There were many tired players at the end of the day, which was testament to their efforts and commitment with St Catherine’s placing outright third. The next District competition is AFLW on Wednesday 15 June when St Catherine’s gets the chance to take on our District neighbours.

District Netball

St Catherine’s selected nine girls to play and represent our School in the Armadale District Netball Tournament on Wednesday 25 May.

With a slow start to the day, we came up against a strong Sacre Coeur team who beat us by four goals. In our second match we were ready to go, with a stellar shooting performance from Coco Lutz, Ellie Rodski and Tara Pattison we ran away with a 16-4 win against Genazzano.

After another big win against Firbank, we were up against top-ranked Lauriston in the semi finals. It was our best game of the day, and a very tightly contested game. Goal after goal, the pressure was on, it was 5-5 at half time. They made a strong push towards the end of the match as Lauriston came away with the win 12- 9.

After a long day of netball our final match was played against Loreto. Our team fought right to the end, leaving it all on the court, however Loreto won 6-5. We finished fourth overall.

It was a fantastic effort from all our girls. They displayed brilliant teamwork and sports(wo)manship all day long.

A special mention to our two defenders for the day Arabella Foote and Isla Rosenberg – dream team defending in the goal circle!
