From the Classroom – Year 2 Sleepover

Our Year 2 students enjoyed a night away from home last week with a sleepover at School!

While the games and novelty of eating dinner in the Mary Davis Centre Café were fun, the highlight was definitely glamping in the magical tents in our Selina Yao Auditorium.

The evening forms part of our Wellbeing@St Catherine’s Program, within the weExplore theme, which focuses on ELC to Year 2 students exploring who they are through learning and play.

For some of the girls, this was the first time they spent the night away from home. Encouraging this independence through gentle steps such as a sleepover in a safe and known environment, with their friends and teacher, allows the girls to slowly build their resilience and autonomy for future challenges.

The girls had a wonderful time and have provided very descriptive recounts of the evening’s events, which are provided below.

On Wednesday, 1 December 2021 we had our extraordinary sleepover. As soon as lunch was over we started to set up the amazing tents. After School, Year 2B and 1O did some team building activities with Simon. The activities were: caterpillar races, ball lifting game, skeleton game and the parachute. When that was finished we all went up to the canteen to have dinner. When the Year 1s had left, the Year 2s were left to watch Charlotte’s Web and to have a PJ fashion show. Sleeping in the tent was the best thing! I especially liked the little lanterns. In the morning we went to the canteen for breakfast. Then we came back and had a play in the playground. It was the best day of my life.

Have you ever been on a sleepover? Well I have. It was amazing!! It all started on Wednesday 1 December 2021. At 3:20pm, 2B and 1O were waiting and waiting until everyone left, so our Year 2 sleepover could begin. It was an amazing evening. First 2B set up our tents, they were awesome. The tents also had fairy lights, lanterns, bunting, breakfast tables and small shaped pillows. Then we got changed and went outside for team building activities with Simon. We did a few activities, but then it started to rain so we went undercover and then inside, but we still had so much fun. All our Year 1 friends had to go after this. So we went back inside and watched Charlotte’s Web, a beautiful movie about a young girl and pig. Then we went to bed in our tents. I think that everyone should experience a sleepover like ours!

Guess what happened on the 1 December? We had a School sleepover! It started with setting up tents. They were gorgeous. They came with fairy lights, white and pink lanterns, breakfast tables, mattresses and colourful pillows. We all unpacked our bags, got changed and had a snack. Next we met a man named Simon and we played team games with the Year 1s. It was so much fun and my favourite game was the caterpillar race. It is when five people put straps around their ankles and try to walk as a team. My other favourite game was a game called mushroom. After the Year 1s went home we had dinner in the canteen. For dinner I had a salad, sausage and an apple juice. We went back to the classroom and got ready to watch Charlotte’s Web, but before that we had one of my favourite bits, we had a pyjama fashion show! It was really fun. Nearly everyone did it. Next we watched the movie and I loved it. The end was a bit sad but it is just a story. We all went into our tents and read a book. My tent was decorated with hearts. It took me one hour to go to sleep. I was next to Grace and Ashley. I woke up at 6.00am and read for a while. We started packing up at 7.00am and got ready. At 7.30am we went to the canteen and I had one bowl of rice rubbles and two pieces of toast with butter and jam. Then we knew the sleepover was over. I was sad but I loved it because it was fun and full of laughter.

An amazing thing happened on Wednesday 1 December. It was the Year 2 SLEEPOVER! First we set up our tents. My tent was white with stars. They also had fairy lights, flower lights and a breakfast table. Then we did some team building activities. We did a caterpillar race, we made a mushroom out of a big parachute and we did a blindfold game with beanbags. After that we went up to the canteen and had dinner. It was delicious! Then the fun began! We got changed into our PJs, brushed our teeth and started doing a pyjama parade. Everyone walked down the middle of the tents one at a time and everyone else cheered. Then we watched Charlotte’s Web. We stayed up pretty late. Then breakfast came. We went to the canteen and for breakfast I had vegemite toast and rice bubbles. The sleepover was not good, it was great! I really want to have it again.

Yesterday was the best Year 2 sleepover! But it was not an ordinary sleepover. It was a magical sleepover! It started with setting up these beautiful tents. The tents looked very pretty and girly. We named all the connected tents, 2B Princess Land. Then we did some team building activities with Simon. He was lots of fun! My favourite activities were the blindfold activity and building a skeleton. The best thing I loved was watching Charlotte’s Web. After that we said goodnight and we went to sleep in our tents. It was like I was in a little apartment for the night. I felt excited and I would love to do it again! I would definitely recommend it to other Year 2 girls next year to try it out.
