From the Head of Music

The determination and independence of St Catherine’s students across both Junior and Senior School continues to amaze me.

It is wonderful to see so many students continue to pursue their study of an instrument or voice and set ambitious goals for themselves during COVID-19 lockdown restrictions.

Given the challenges of presenting in person, our planned Music performances during Term 3, and the postponement of the Milestones 125 Gala Concert until 2022, we have launched ‘Music Mondays’ and ‘Milestones 125: Unplugged’ via St Catherine’s social media platforms and The Blue Ribbon. Our aim is to showcase the ongoing creativity and achievements of St Catherine’s Music students.

In July this year, Christina Wu, (Year 10) was awarded her AmusA in Violin. She impressed the assessors by presenting a 45-minute program from memory! This is an incredible achievement and our hearty congratulations go out to her. Christina was showcased as part of our Music Mondays which can be viewed here.

Also in July this year, Rosie (Olivia) Bogdan, (Year 11) was awarded Honours for her Grade 8 Violin Examination. This is also a fantastic achievement. Rosie is a wonderful contributor to Jorgensen Orchestra and Senior Strings and has featured in four St Catherine’s Concerto Concerts. Rosie also plays alto Saxophone in Jazz Band and the Senior Saxophone Ensemble.

Flora Du, (Year 10) is the epitome of resilience and determination. Her Grade 6 Violin Exam has been postponed four times but she is determined. Flora features in our Milestones 125: Unplugged this week.

Meanwhile our choirs, bands and orchestras continue to make music online and Elf and Wizard of Oz continue to rehearse. Our Year 12 students, Sophie Williams (Voice Classical), Catherine Chen (Pianoforte) and Isabelle Musson (Piano Contemporary) are all preparing for their VCE recitals.

We hope to bring you their performances soon.
