Junior and Intermediate Rowing Report

Mini Regatta Versus Methodist Ladies College

On Saturday 24 November 2018, both our Junior and Intermediate squads took part in some ‘friendly’ racing against Methodist Ladies College on the Maribyrnong River. This provided an additional opportunity for our rowers to race against another school and proved to be an invaluable experience for all.

Sacred Heart Regatta

On Saturday 1 December 2018, our Junior and Intermediate squads once again journeyed to Geelong for the Sacred Heart Regatta. All rowers showed significant improvement in their fitness and technical prowess which led to greater boat speed across the St Catherine’s School Rowing fleet.

The Intermediate Rowers who competed in the morning, were short a rower due to injury and a coxswain. Thankfully two members of our Junior squad stepped up to race in the Intermediate squad for the day. Special thanks to Madeline Powell (Year 8) and Eloise Rudge (Year 8), your cooperation and sportsmanship is both admirable and much appreciated.

The Junior coxswains were once again tested with strong winds present during the afternoon session of racing. To their credit, they passed with flying colours and I thank them for keeping their crews safe: Summer Balla-Kellett (Year 8), Isabella Bez (Year 8), Olivia Cunningham (Year 8), India Marner (Year 8), Rosie Osborn (Year 8), Pippa Shergold (Year 8), Beatrix Watkins (Year 8) and Pia Zayontz (Year 8).

Congratulations to the following crews who won their respective divisions:

  • 8 Williams – Scarlett Davis (Year 8), Clarence Houle-O’Connor (Year 8), Yasmin Jayasekera (Year 8), India Marner (Year 8) and Lan-Tian Yen-West (Year 8).

I would also like to acknowledge the 9 Gunn, 8 Cross, 8 Bernard, 8 Gunn and 8 Heyington crews who won their heats and went on to race competitively in their respective A Final. This was particularly impressive given some of these crews were racing in higher divisions than usual.

Our Junior and Intermediate squads have had opportunities to race quality opposition over the past four weeks on the Barwon, Maribyrnong and Yarra Rivers respectively. We now look to racing in Term 1, 2019 with great anticipation and excitement.
