Barbreck Music Concert 2018

What a wonderful evening we all shared! The 2018 Barbreck Concert celebrated and showcased the exceptional Music programs available from Prep to Year 6 students. The talent was very evident and most importantly, effort, determination and pride were clear ingredients so recognisable in each performer.

Congratulations indeed to all the staff involved in the Music program. Their passion for teaching the craft of music is ever present. Applause to each staff member and hearty congratulations for the concert and all the fine work so evident in 2018.

Special thanks to Mrs Melissa Dods for the special event which yet again was superbly organised with due respect and credit afforded to all of those involved.

To Mrs Lisa Cook, special congratulations for the amazing skill demonstrated in the organisation and set up of such an enormous number of string players all in the one item!

A wonderful annual event which is rightly anticipated by the Barbreck community. We are proud of the beautiful way in which Barbreck students express their love of music.

Salvation Army Christmas Appeal

We invite all families to join the Barbreck community and donate to the 2018 Salvation Army Christmas Appeal. Donations can be brought to Barbreck. Types of donations include:

  • Unwrapped toys/gifts for boys/girls (new items only)
  • Tins of perishable food
  • Gift cards
  • No soft toys by request please.

A number of parents will transport all gifts and donations to a Salvation Army collection point when school concludes and we appreciate this offer indeed. We thank families in advance for assisting this needy cause.

Request for Old Mobile Phones

Many of us have mobile phones at home which are no longer in use. We can help a very worthy cause by collecting and donating them, and the Barbreck Environment Committee have found just the place!

The Environment Committee are leading a campaign of collecting unwanted mobile phones to be sent to the Roots and Shoots campaign. Dr Sarah Triolo (Charlotte, Year 1), a veterinarian, is helping the campaign and recently outlined the needs to a lunchtime Committee meeting.

Saving chimpanzees is a critical issue and one major threat to their existence is the mining of the mineral, coltan. Mobile phones in construction require the mineral coltan. Unfortunately, the major source of coltan is found in areas which are the natural habitat of chimpanzees. The habitat is destroyed when trees are destroyed which results in the chimpanzees becoming totally displaced. Any reduction of the necessity to mine as widely and frequently will assist to save the habitat and maintain chimpanzees.

Unused mobile phones and chargers can be brought to school and placed in the special collection box in the Barbreck foyer area. Please assist us to fight against extinction of another animal.

As the Environment Committee constantly inform us, “green is not just a colour”.

Farewell

As the school year closes, we warmly wish the best for Ms Sue Cooke, Mrs Glenda Lingard and Mrs Mary Karvounaris who leave Barbreck at St Catherine’s School in order to retire. May they enjoy the next stage of their journey in the knowledge that they have each contributed wonderful careers in education.

Thank you

As 2018 draws to a close and I prepare to leave, I have been thoroughly privileged to have been surrounded by families, students and colleagues who have extended friendship, camaraderie and a shared passion for the value of education as a priority.

Thank you for the warm welcome in 2007 which has never changed throughout my experience at St Catherine’s, the extensive support and the willingness to see school and home as being partners in a journey of positive purpose towards fostering a love of learning in young people. Also, for the shared stories and humour and understanding always readily available.

I close the chapter on a career for which I will always maintain an ongoing passion and enthusiasm, but will always treasure all that St Catherine’s School values.

I wish Ms Karen McArdle and the Barbreck staff, together with Ms Sarah Bethune and Campbell House Staff, a wonderful commencement to the 2019 school year and beyond.

Mrs Alana Moor, Head of Barbreck and ELC
