From our Deputy Principal

In the blink of an eye it seems, we are at the end of the year. The House Arts is in full swing and as I write, the girls are putting the final touches to their performances. This week is hectic to say the least, as we approach the last day of term and indeed, the year.

For me, today is particularly important as it marks not only the end of my time at St Catherine’s but my career in education. Over the last few weeks, and especially this week, I have found myself reflecting on my time here.

This school, this community, has become part of my soul, and I think it will always be so.  I remember the very first time I set foot on the grounds back in 2017. As I walked through the Heyington Gates I was greeted by two girls who asked if I needed any help in where to go. They escorted me to Reception and along the way were happy to chat. I was taken by their warmth and kindness to stop and help out a stranger. That introduction to the girls of St Catherine’s and their generosity of spirit has been evident every day over the last eight years.

It has been a joy to be a part of this community. I have held positions at many schools in Melbourne, yet St Catherine’s, in my opinion, is not only equal to, but superior to these acclaimed schools. I’m not referring to academic achievement or sporting successes, although we do exceptionally well in that regard, but it is the way this school functions. Teachers, parents and students are deeply connected in the desire to have a community where our students flourish.

What I see here is a school that values people. Everyone is kind, respectful and generous. It has been a privilege and a joy to be at St Catherine’s these last eight years, and I feel grateful to have had such a connection, one that makes saying farewell so hard. This School is made up of wonderful teachers, wonderful families and of course, wonderful students. It has been an honour to be part of this community.

Last evening, as I watched my final House Arts, I felt a surge of mixed emotions. However, the enthusiasm, energy and talent of the girls ensured a wonderful evening in true St Catherine’s style. It was a great night, and a fitting end to my time at the School.

Nil Magnum Nisi Bonum
