Year 9 Japanese – Flower Arrangement Workshop

We are fortunate to have Mrs. Nobuko Kobayashi supporting our Japanese speaking program for Years 9 to 12. Mrs. Kobayashi is not only a former VCE Japanese teacher at St Michael’s Grammar School, but also a senior Ikebana (Japanese flower arrangement) instructor of the Ichiyo School of Ikebana. She served as President of the Ikebana International Melbourne Chapter from 2022 to 2024.

On 30 May, the Year 9 Japanese class had the opportunity to participate in an Ikebana lesson with Mrs. Kobayashi. During the session, students explored the Japanese concept of negative space, which is an integral aspect of the Japanese aesthetic. By having this hands-on experience where the students were able to explore and appreciate a traditional art form that contrasts widely with the Western principles. This experience offered them a deeper insight into Japanese aesthetics to inspire a lasting appreciation for Japanese arts.
