Armadale District Soccer Competition
On Monday 19 May, the St Catherine’s District Soccer Team proudly represented the school at the 2025 Armadale District Soccer Competition, held at Sacré Cœur. The event brought together eight schools in a round-robin tournament, with teams divided into two pools. St Catherine’s competed in Pool A, alongside Firbank, Lauriston, and Melbourne Girls Grammar School.
Our team, made up of 11 enthusiastic Year 6 students – Sophie Sprott, Isla Goddard, Elizabeth Switkowski, Francesca Zappone, Ellie Wang, Scarlett Lam, Sophia Magennis, Eloise Fitzgerald, Sienna Xu, Foxx Robertson and Ella Pattison – demonstrated outstanding commitment, teamwork, and school spirit across the day. Coached by Mr Whittaker, the girls played with determination in every match.
While our pool matches didn’t go our way on the scoreboard, the girls never gave up. After a tough opening loss to Firbank (4–0), the team bounced back with two spirited performances, leading in both games before narrow defeats to Lauriston (3–2, with both goals by Sophie Sprott) and Melbourne Girls Grammar School (2–1, another goal from Sophie). Their persistence paid off with a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Korowa in the playoff match, with goals from Sophie Sprott and Sophia Magennis, securing a 7th-place finish.
There were many standout moments throughout the day. Sophie Sprott had a fantastic tournament, scoring four goals and leading the line with confidence. Isla Goddard stepped into the role of goalkeeper for the first time and displayed incredible resilience and bravery. Ellie Wang stood strong in defence, showing unwavering composure under pressure.
More than the results, what stood out most was the team’s unity and sportsmanship. The girls supported one another, gave everything they had on the field, and left with smiles on their faces – and a newfound passion for the game of soccer.
A big thank you to Miss Cody, our Head of Sport, for coordinating our involvement in this amazing event. Congratulations to all the girls who represented St Catherine’s.
