Year 11 Biology Excursion
On Tuesday 27 May, six Year 11 Biology students attended the 2025 Blood Synergy Conference at Monash University. The Blood Synergy is a NHMRC-funded program of research coordinated by the Transfusion Research Unit at Monash University. This was a fantastic opportunity for students to attend an Open Meeting of scientific researchers and clinicians as they presented their latest findings on new knowledge on conventional and novel blood products, and health systems and health economics. The students spent the morning listening to presentations and engaging with the researchers in informal conversations.
Below are some reflections from students Cadence Law, Opal Scheele and Gladys Lam.
“Listening to the researchers and scientists present their findings really shifted my understanding of what a career in science research involves. I didn’t realise how much time and effort is put into a single study. From forming a research question and gathering background information to running experiments and publishing results, it could take over 8 years, which was very shocking to me.” – Cadence Law
“I was already considering going into the science field and now I know for sure that my career path will be something along these lines after attending the conference. The blood synergy conference helped me decide so I think it will also help other students too.” – Opal Scheele
“My favourite part was having the chance to speak directly with professionals from different industries, from doctors to data analysts. Overall, this was a truly inspiring and gorgeous experience that made me excited to keep exploring science as a future pathway for me to explore science beyond the classroom.” – Gladys Lam
