Preparing for Leadership

Although we are still only part way through Term 3, our Year 11 students are already in the midst of the application process for student leadership positions for 2024.

Therefore, it is timely for me to reflect on the incredible journey these students have embarked upon in their pursuit of leadership excellence.

Over the past two and a half years, these students have embraced the challenges and opportunities presented through our St Catherine’s Leadership Diploma, which they commenced in Year 9. This Diploma, spanning Years 9, 10, and 11, has encouraged them to contribute holistically to our School and the broader community, through their participation in sport, clubs, music, and community service.

All Year 11 students who have successfully completed their Leadership Diplomas have been invited to take part in this opportunity. The application process has offered a chance for the girls to put their acquired skills into practice and demonstrate their readiness for leadership roles.

At the heart of the Year 12 leadership structure lies the Student Executive. In 2024 the Executive will comprise eight outstanding students, two of whom will be elected as School Co-Captains. These leaders will play a pivotal role in shaping our School’s culture, spearheading initiatives, and fostering a sense of unity among their peers.

In addition to the Student Executive Team, our leaders will extend their influence across many facets of St Catherine’s. Captains of co-curricular activities, House Captains, clubs, and individual Sport and Music Captains will each bring their unique expertise to their respective portfolios. This approach ensures that almost every facet of School life receives focused attention, leadership and importantly, student voice.

However, it is important to note that leadership is not confined to formal roles. A student does not need a specific title to be a leader. Leadership is about influence, inspiration, and positive change. Every student, whether applying for a formal position or not, has the potential to be a leader in their own right, making a difference within our School community and beyond. As Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris simply states, “You never have to ask anyone permission to lead. When you want to lead, you lead.”

I am so proud of every Year 11 student and the enormous growth that I have witnessed in each of them over the past 18 months. I am particularly thrilled by the number of students who have put their hand up to apply for a leadership role. This takes courage, confidence, and stepping out of their comfort zones to apply for these positions. It is a testament to their dedication, passion and a desire for positive outcomes that makes these students so enthusiastic about taking on leadership responsibilities in their final year at St Catherine’s.
