There is no ‘I’ in Team

Our Junior School House Athletics Carnival is a special day for our girls. It is a day where every girl is striving for their House with fellow teammates and experiencing that special feeling of being part of something bigger than yourself.

This feeling was very evident in the lead up to our House Athletics Carnival. Our House Captains, busily prepared chants, purchased energy-giving sweets for House teammates, and provided pep-talks to the girls about the Carnival Day. There was a great sense of belonging in the lead up to, and on the day of, House Athletics, and this was most evident on the happy faces of our girls on Monday!

All our participating girls wore their House shirts and ribbons, proudly displaying the House they belonged to. House pride was also seen in the way the girls encouraged each other to try their best, congratulating all who competed and being excited to mix with girls from a range of ages.

Congratulations to our Junior School House Captains for their leadership during the House Athletics Carnival

Our House Captains did a marvellous job during House Athletics. They led, encouraged, supported, and praised their House Teams. They also led by example with some truly amazing personal efforts to demonstrate commitment to their Team. One House Captain in the Relay came from fourth position to win the race! This was an inspiring performance and a lesson in what determination and commitment to a goal can achieve.

A sense of belonging can be defined as “feelings of being accepted and valued by peers and by others at school.” Belonging is feeling comfortable and safe in an environment, such as school. Belonging is finding your place in the world in which you live. For our girls, home and School are their worlds, and it is good to know our girls have a positive feeling of belonging to Barbreck.

A sense of belonging also contributes to a student’s academic success and wellbeing. We see this at Barbreck every day. When girls are happy, see themselves as successful and feel safe and supported by their school, teachers, and friends, they are more motivated to participate, strive and often achieve well in all areas of school life.

I know many of the younger girls tried hard to do well for their Team and older House mates, wanting them to feel proud of their efforts. Likewise, the older girls worked hard and put themselves out there as wonderful role models and examples of doing their best for the younger girls.

This admiration and striving to do their best for each other is what makes a great team. While there could only be one winning House on the day, all the girls were winners as they presented the best versions of themselves. All the girls worked hard for their Teams and supported and encouraged each other. I could not ask for better!

Special thanks go to Mr Crebbin, returning from Long Service Leave, and Ms Cody for their wonderful organisation of the day. Thanks also to the many teachers who worked at various stations and to our marvellous parents for coming along to cheer their daughters on. It was another special Barbreck day!

Happy Mother’s Day

I wish all our Barbreck mothers a very special Mother’s Day this Sunday. Mothers are often the glue that holds families together, organise everyone and make sure things run smoothly. Mostly their work goes unseen, after everyone is in bed or before people rise in the mornings – we could not do without you.

I wish you all a pampered Sunday, time spent with loved ones and a sense of being truly appreciated and loved.

Ms Karen McArdle, Head of Junior School
