NAPLAN Report Changes

Thank you to our Barbreck parents for supporting their daughters throughout this week as our Years 3 and 5 students undertook NAPLAN testing for 2023.

From this year, parents and carers will receive their child’s NAPLAN Report earlier and in a simpler and clearer format.

Education Ministers from across Australia have agreed to change the way NAPLAN results are reported to parents by introducing new proficiency standards with four levels of achievement for each Year level tested. These will replace the 10-band structure and national minimum standards previously used.

The four levels of achievement will be:

  • Exceeding
  • Strong
  • Developing
  • Needs additional support.

It is hoped these descriptors will make clear to parents what their child’s literacy and numeracy skills are at the time of NAPLAN testing. The reports will continue to show the national average and the range of achievement for the middle 60%, allowing for comparison of a child’s achievement against these measures.

NAPLAN will continue to measure student achievement across the five areas of: reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation, and numeracy.

From 2023, NAPLAN testing will continue to occur in Term 1 for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9.

The new proficiency scales will be included in all NAPLAN reporting, including the National Report and the My School website.

Establishing Good Home Routines – the evidence is positive

Establishing a 20 minute daily reading routine provides long lasting, positive outcomes for your daughter.

The illustration on the right demonstrates how this daily routine has a significant impact on academic success.

I encourage all our students and families to take on this positive and rewarding routine.

Parent-Teacher Meetings

Thank you to all our Barbreck Families for meeting with your daughter’s teachers to gain further insights into their learning progress so far this year during our Parent-Teacher Meetings.

Our teachers are a wonderful source of information and are happy to assist with ideas for home learning and working in partnership with parents to achieve the best outcomes for your daughters.

If you require additional time to continue these conversations please contact your daughter’s teacher to set up another meeting.

We trust the option to either meet teachers face-to-face or online was valuable for our Barbreck Families. If you have feedback on these offerings, please email barbreck@stcatheriens.net.au . All constructive feedback is welcome.

Child Safety News

At St Catherine’s, we endorse the 11 Child Safe Standards.
