Our Year 2 girls began their school year with great enthusiasm. They have been keen to see old friends and make new connections with their classmates.

The beginning of year has been busy as we set up new routines. In English, the girls have been exploring inferential comprehension through written and spoken language. They have enjoyed exploring the picture story book, Family Forest and have developed many skills to enable them to unpack the author’s intent.

We have set up spelling routines and this week the girls enjoyed using stamps to ‘write’ their spelling words. During our writing sessions we are investigating rich language and the importance of adding adjectives to describe nouns, adding appeal for the reader. We have focussed on pronouns and how they can be effectively used in writing.

In Mathematics, we have explored numbers to 1,000 through skip counting and number patterns. We looked at number lines and how to mark two-digit numbers. To aid us in this task the class discussed strategies to assist them. We also investigated addition and subtraction as inverse operations.

This week we have explored Australian coins; their values and their features. We added totals of coins, and one of the class’s favourite activities was finding various combinations of coins that add up to a given total.

In History, we are investigating significant people, buildings, and local sites. In class the girls have looked at an array of artefacts, their uses and significance to the Indigenous culture. We have brainstormed and discussed significant features in our community.

We are looking forward to a year filled with discoveries and learning.
