2022 was a year to remember for our Year 6 Cohort. A time to return to campus and spend their final year in Barbreck together once more. Below some of our Class of 2022 Year 6 Cohort provide some reflections.

Year 6, 2022, was a year to remember. The Class of 2028 has victoriously come back from two long years of lockdown, and experienced a full year of leadership, fun, learning and progressing toward a better future, and a new start.

Year 6 came together not at the start of the year, when most people met each other, but near the end. We can and have only been in Year 6 since our last new student. The entire Cohort will undoubtedly miss Barbreck, all students, teachers, and specifically the supportive environment.

After years of not being able to go on camps, in Term 3, Year 6 went on a Study Tour to Canberra. The Tour was full of surprises, interesting mishaps, and knowledge. Later in the term, Gala Night was held, and it was a night to remember. Both the Senior and Junior School students came together to put on a wonderful performance, and beautifully finish off the term.

After the Term 3 holidays, Year 6 had yet another camp to attend. This time, Year 5 came along, and we went on two buses to Camp Jungai. Many found that Camp Jungai was much more enjoyable than Canberra, it was definitely filled with lots of nature and learning. Overall, Year 6, 2022, has been another success. As we say our last goodbyes, we will start a new chapter in the Senior School.

On 5 December, Year 6 students and parents celebrated their graduation/farewell of Barbreck, in The Jamie and Rebecca Gray Theatre. Year 6 students had decorated and set the long rows of tables used for dining at the celebration. The scrumptious food served was freshly created by Chartwell Foods. The Year 6 students sang the School Anthem, and the Year 6 Choir sang, Cover me in Sunshine by Pink with pride and honour in front of their parents, and teachers. The Year 6 classes also lined up to share their favourite memories of Barbreck. Following this each student then received their ‘Red Step’ badge, presented by SCOGA President, Ms Sarah O’Brien (‘02). The badge is in the shape of a red square and represents that we once sat on the Red Steps of Barbreck, a privilege we had to wait until Year 6 to enjoy. We also received a special pen, engraved with the St Catherine’s emblem, which will be used to sign yearbooks at the end of the year.

This year has been an eventful year full of riveting and exciting events during our last year in Barbreck. This year has felt like a breeze with many exciting events, including Interschool sports, joining early morning clubs and much more. Our Year 6 Cohort has felt like this year has gone by too fast. Term 4 has been filled with the Music Concert, Graduation, and swimming at lunch time to cool down from the hot summer days. My peers all agree that this year was one of the best years of our Junior School experience.

The Year 6 Celebration Dinner was a fantastic way to honour our primary years. All the Year 6 students have enjoyed every memory they have made and every new friendship they have created in this warm community.

The Celebration Dinner started off with the Year 6 students escorting their parents to The Jamie and Rebecca Theatre. Ms Carroll commenced the night with an encouraging speech for our future, as did Ms McArdle. Everyone enjoyed the different varieties of dishes on offer while watching some old or new photos on the screen. After our dinner, the Year 6 students performed their musical piece Cover Me in Sunshine to their parents. I think we will remember the night with great fondness, pride, and sense of achievement.
