2022 will go down as one of the most successful years of sport in St Catherine’s School’s history. Record results in GSV competitions, along with the remarkable achievements of our Rowing and Snowsports Programs make for a very impressive highlights package!

Congratulations to every student who represented St Catherine’s throughout the year. Highlights from 2022 include:

GSV Sport
  • 2022 was the most successful year in our twenty-one-year history of GSV weekly sport. Fourteen teams progressed to finals. Of these 14 teams, 12 were in the A Grade competition.
  • Over 100 students were involved in the St Catherine’s Tennis Program, with our Junior and Intermediate A Teams progressing to finals.
  • All four of our Softball Teams made finals. The Junior A Softball Team won St Catherine’s School’s first ever Softball Premiership. Our Senior Softball Team, that finished GSV runners up, represented the GSV in the Victorian Softball Schools Championships, placing third overall.
  • Our Diving Team won the GSV Division 3 Championship Carnival. Eleven of our swimmers competed in the GSV finals, placing these swimmers in the top 10 GSV schools. Two gold and one bronze medal were won.
  • Our highly talented Senior Hockey Team set out to defend their 2019 title. They won their Zone and finished with a goal difference of +44, before winning the GSV Grand Final 11-0. Our Junior and Intermediate Teams both had excellent seasons and progressed to the GSV finals to finish third and fourth, respectively.
  • Our Senior Water Polo Team won their Zone after finishing undefeated with an impressive goal difference of +68. A tough game against MLC in the semi-final sent the team to the third-place play-off where the girls re-grouped to beat Mentone 11-3 and secure third place in the GSV.
  • Our Junior A Soccer Team progressed to the GSV finals, winning their semi before narrowly losing in the Grand Final 0-1.
  • St Catherine’s competed in the Division 2 Track & Field Championship Carnival and had 18 students qualify to compete at the GSV Finals Night. This saw the return of three gold medals, one silver and two bronze medals. These results placed St Catherine’s ninth out of 24 schools on the medal tally.
  • Cricket and Basketball were back on the agenda for the first time since 2019. It was fantastic to have large numbers of students involved in these competitions. Our Junior A Basketball Team were a standout, progressing to the finals.
  • Our Junior Water Polo Team put an exclamation point on the year by taking out the GSV A Grade Premiership with a 6-1 win over Loreto.
Rowing

Our Senior crews had an incredible season, with the First VIII finishing the year undefeated. This included wins at the Nagambie Regatta, Australian Henley Regatta, State Championships, Head of Schoolgirls Regatta, and the Australian National Championships. This crew progressed to the Henley Royal Regatta in the UK, winning the Prince Philip Challenge Trophy. Several graduating members of this crew have been offered places at USA universities.

Snowsports
  • After two years without competition, 80 students participated in the House Snowsports Weekend, with Langley Templeton winning the overall House Cup.
  • Our Junior School athletes were dominant throughout the year, taking out the overall trophies at the Victorian Cross Country and Interschools Championships, as well as the Australian National Interschools Competition.
  • Likewise, incredible performances from our Senior School athletes saw a third-place finish at the Victorian Cross-Country Championships, an overall win at the Victorian Interschools and a second-place finish at the Australian National Interschools.

  • The annual Sports Celebration Breakfast saw guest presenter Jemima Montag speaking about her experiences as an Olympian and professional race walker. Approximately 150 members of the School community were in attendance as we announced the Excellence and Coaches Award winners from the 2022 GSV competitions as well as the inaugural Team of the Year Award, won by the First VIII Rowing Crew.
  • Several St Catherine’s athletes made GSV Representative Teams including, Lily McNeill and Georgia Stoupas (Year 12, Water Polo) and Amy Chen (Year 10, Tennis).
  • After being selected as the St Catherine’s nominee for the Olympic Change Maker Program, Mietta Passon (Year 11) was selected by the Australian Olympic Committee to attend this year’s National Summit in Canberra. Mietta is one of 24 young leaders selected from over 900 change-making nominees.

The success of St Catherine’s Sports Program is without doubt thanks to the support of our Physical Education and Sport staff, specialist coaches, sport auxiliaries and parents. The ongoing innovation, dedication and enthusiasm displayed by these groups has ensured our sporting teams flourished throughout the year. Congratulations to all our students. We look forward to getting back into competition in 2023.
