From the Prep Classroom – What Does that Mean?

Our Prep girls have been very excited as their ability to decode and read words improves daily. They are also enjoying the independence that complements this skill.

As we become better decoders, the Preps are learning that reading is more than just sounding out words. It is also about understanding what we read.

When the girls commenced Prep they were learning to read. Now, as the girls progress through the year, they are reading to learn.

During our literacy sessions our Preps have been broadening their vocabulary and stopping at words they read to ensure they know the meaning of them. They then spell the words, and place them in a sentence verbally, as well as providing an alternative word and drawing a picture to match.

A new game we have enjoyed playing is ‘Read and Draw Lucky Dip.’ The girls take a word, read it, and draw a picture to match. It is lovely seeing how each student captures the meaning of the words.
