From the Head of Music – Concert Concert 2022

St Catherine’s Concerto Concert was held in the new Black Box Theatre on the evening of Tuesday 29 March. This was the first major event to be held in this impressive new space.

In the days and weeks prior to the Concert, tradesmen, maintenance, and IT Teams had been working frantically to ensure the space was ready for the premiere. This commitment and hard work were rewarded with what was an engaging Concert, in an impressive space.

Students, staff, families, and community members were engaged by a wide range of student performances that demonstrated skill and determination. The professional performance space provided in the Black Box Theatre allowed the students to explore their creativity. These performances were beautifully accompanied by our Jorgensen Orchestra, or a smaller chamber group, featuring students and directed by Mrs Lisa Cook.

The variety was such that students also had the opportunity to work with piano accompaniment. Solo works were presented in the program, along with Yifei (Angela) Tang and Isabelle Kaixuan Cao presenting a duet on the Guzheng, written by Angela herself.

The Concert was ably compered by 2022 Music Captains Charlotte Myer and Catherine Chen, with acknowledgments given by the School Principal, Michelle Carroll, and recognition of the important work undertaken by the Creative Arts Auxiliary provided by Music representative Dr Vanessa Morgan.

The Concerto Concert also acknowledged important scholarships offered to talented violinists within the St Catherine’s Music program.

It is evenings like these that highlight the importance of a dynamic and engaging Music program. These opportunities allow students to explore teamwork and creativity in a supportive setting. It encourages them to take risks and offers the chance for students to take the lead and be bold. We are very fortunate that these opportunities for growth can now be offered to students in the Black Box Theatre. For this vision and commitment, Music and the Performing Arts are grateful.

Congratulations to the following soloists for their outstanding performances and to each staff member and student involved in accompanying the students:

Catherine Chen (Piano)
Janine Jing (Janine) Hu (Horn)
Caitlin Wang (Piano)
Christina Wu (Violin)
Olivia (Rosie) Bogdan (Violin)
