Senior School Production 2022

Urinetown: The Musical, with music and lyrics by Mark Hollmann and book and lyrics by Greg Kotis, started life in the New York International Fringe Festival in 1999. It was one of the first shows to successfully make the transition from Fringe to Broadway in September 2001. The Musical went on to earn ten Tony Nominations and won three Tony Awards, including Best Book, Original Score, and Direction.

In the not-so-distant future, in a town “just like any other town,” a terrible water shortage, and a 20-year drought, have led to a government ban on private toilets and a proliferation of paid public toilets, owned and operated by a monopoly: The Urine Good Company.

If the poor don’t obey the strict laws, they will be sent to the dreaded and mysterious “Urinetown.” After too long under the heel of the malevolent Caldwell B. Cladwell, the poor stage a revolution, led by a brave young hero, fighting tooth and nail for their ‘freedom’. Modelled off the plays of Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht, Urinetown: The Musical is a wickedly funny, fast-paced, and surprisingly intelligent comedic adventure.

The show itself is good, clean fun. As Little Sally tells us “the title’s awful,” and deliberately so, but the show itself is never crude, rude, or lewd. Urinetown is a political and social satire about corporate greed, environmental issues, and idealistic youth, but also serves as a loving parody of a range of musicals; Les Miserables, West Side Story, Fiddler on the Roof, How to Succeed in Business without really Trying, The Threepenny Opera, the list goes on.

The cast has been working on the production since the beginning of Term 1. Developing characters, learning the intricate vocal score, realising the choreography, and understanding the style and types of character tropes being parodied. They are excited to bring this production to the new Black Box Theatre across four performances this year.
