Co-Curricular Conversations – Chess Boosts Rational Thinking Skills

A recent study by Monash and Deakin Universities, The Effects of Chess Instruction on Academic and Non-cognitive Outcomes: Field Experimental Evidence from a Developing Country, found “children who were taught chess, and played regularly over time, were more likely to be less risk-averse than their peers.” The study also found playing chess could “boost maths and rational thinking skills.”

Within Barbreck, our Chess Club provides students the opportunity to learn chess strategies, play chess tournaments against one another, and compete in Interschool Chess tournaments.

The Club is open to all students from Years 1 to 6, and all abilities are catered for, from beginner through to advanced competitors. Students are always encouraged to come and try Chess, but we do ask students to commit to the Chess Club on an ongoing basis if they wish to continue.

Learning and playing chess helps children develop their thinking and problem-solving skills, improves their concentration and focus, whilst also being a great source of enjoyment.

The St Catherine’s Barbreck Chess Team is coached by expert coach, Mr Ross Neumann. Ross assists students to hone their chess-playing skills and knowledge in a fun atmosphere.
