Junior School – Year 2 – Mathematics hands-on learning activities

Year 2W have been enjoying the hands-on learning activities in Mathematics, particularly learning about measurement. The girls poured water into jugs and learnt about the importance of having a standard unit of measurement, such as millilitres, when comparing the capacity of two different sized jugs. They also enjoyed the scavenger hunt where they had to discover and measure the length of some paper bugs.

Throughout the unit, they were provided with the challenge to create the longest possible paper chain using only one sheet of A4 paper. The girls all took a different approach with some choosing to create long, skinny chains and others creating short, wide chains. The longest paper chain ended up being over six metres long, with the next coming in at over five metres! A couple of chains were just over four metres and together, all the chains looped the perimeter of the classroom nearly two times! It was a team effort with lots of discussion around how to accurately measure with a standard unit in order to accurately compare!
