Blue Gum Room – Self Portraits

“Identity is unique to each individual, and defines who people are, what shapes their interests and how they come to view the people and events around them.” Victorian Early Years Learning Framework.

Currently in the Blue Gum classroom, the children have been invited to draw a self-portrait of themselves. Each term we will be inviting the children to engage in this experience to allow teachers to observe their fine motor development, and follow their progression from the start to the end of the year.

Children’s self-portraits also offer teachers an insight to each child’s sense of identity and their perspectives of the world. The focus at the self-portrait table is to consider each child’s perception of themselves and how this can be further explored to deepen their sense of identity. We will begin to share these drawings to provoke discussions with the children to build their sense of belonging and identity within the Blue Gum Community.
