Superhack – Engineering Hackathon 2019

Every year, students from schools around Victoria are invited to compete in teams at the Engineering Hackathon – Superhack, where they solve engineering design challenges based on a real industry problem.

Superhack is hosted by the Melbourne University Electrical Engineering Club (MUEEC) and is a high-school engineering hackathon for young women.

Claire Hayne, Xing Yi (Jasmyn) Jiang, Indiana Wilde, Erica Pan, Lucy Campbell and Amber Liong accepted an invitation from the Science Faculty to compete in Superhack.  Team Shell-Shock, Lucy Campbell, Erica Pan and Amber Liong were First place winners.

There were 25 teams and each was mentored by two students from the University of Melbourne and industry experts. Students had the opportunity to hear from industry experts who are all passionate about engineering.

Being an engineer is all about creative invention and problem-solving. However, often at times students can feel discouraged from engineering due to its reputation of being too abstract or gendered.

At Superhack, MUEEC want engineering to feel relatable and to show that it can be used to help people improve lives. They aim to teach young women the core concepts behind engineering through a fun and engaging challenge, whilst providing them with an opportunity to talk to industry mentors and university students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

While the challenge itself varies every year, the central theme of teaching young women to innovate, help others, and change the world through engineering remains. That is why MUEEC decided to brand the event Superhack, a superhero-themed hackathon that puts `her’ in `hero’.

Superhack was held on Saturday 30 November and Sunday 1 December 2019 at the Kwong Lee Dow Building, University of Melbourne, Parkville campus.

MUEEC will be donating an ANET A8M (dual extruder) 3D-printer kit, along with a prize money of AUD $1,000 to the Science Department of St Catherine’s School.

The Final Top Three Teams were:

  1. Shell Shock – Team 16 – St Catherine’s School
  2. Christi 2.0 – Team 4 – John Monash Science School
  3. Jyp-Jyp – Team 10 – Toorak College
