Rising AFL Stars

The weekend saw a number of St Catherine’s students playing in AFL Grand Finals around Melbourne. I was lucky enough to watch the match between the Glen Iris Gladiators and Park Orchards. St Catherine’s was heavily represented in the Glen Iris team, with 11 of our Year 9 students playing for the Gladiators.

The team got off to a great start thanks to Sophie Gorton’s creativity in the forward line. She was unstoppable once the ball hit the ground and finished the game with three goals. When Park Orchards caught up in the third quarter, a crucial set shot goal from Ruby Seymour gave the Gladiators some breathing room. That was short lived, however, with a nail biting final quarter to ensue. The midfield run of Elodie Ferrali and Lucy Campbell, as well as some huge defensive efforts from Sophie Gough and Isabella Bufé, stopped the opposition from scoring and ensured Glen Iris came away with an eight point win.

Congratulations to the girls and we look forward to them putting their skills into action for the St Catherine’s GSV AFL team in 2019.
