From the Principal – Our School Co-Captains 2025

Yesterday marked a truly joyous and memorable occasion for our School community as we announced the new School Co-Captains for 2025 Rachel Carton and Vinuki Thiseka (Vinuki) Ranatunga.

The air was filled with a palpable sense of excitement and pride as the Year 11 students gathered to celebrate the culmination of a rigorous selection process and to welcome the School’s 2025 Student Executive consisting of Rachel, Vinuki and Lilly Fogarty, Sophie Powell, Jessica Sibly and Natalie Wang, who will guide our student body through the upcoming year.

The announcement was a reflection of the vibrant spirit of St Catherine’s. The leadership announcement was held in the Sherren House Ballroom, where the atmosphere was buzzing with anticipation. The selection process was thorough and demanding, with all students nominated demonstrating remarkable leadership qualities and a strong commitment to our School’s Values. The speeches made by the six members of the Student Executive to all students at our Senior School Assembly on Monday were impressive. Each person inspired the audience with their vision for 2025 where they all aspire to lead with integrity and kindness.

As each candidate took the stage to give a brief speech, their words were met with enthusiastic applause. Their speeches were filled with gratitude, ambition, and a clear sense of purpose. They spoke about their plans to address student concerns, enhance School activities, and create a positive and supportive atmosphere. It was evident that they were ready to embrace their roles with enthusiasm and a deep sense of responsibility. Excerpts of these speeches are available here.

At the announcement of the School Co-Captains in the Ballroom, it was evident the Year 11 Cohort is totally supportive of the student leadership team and our new Co-Captains for 2025. There was a very special moment when the President of SCOGA, Ms Anna Foley (’92) presented the new Co-Captains with a bouquet of flowers each. This was a magic moment.

There was a final part of the proceedings which really moved me. After the announcement and when the Year 11 girls were drifting off to their next class, the six Executive Members Rachel, Vinuki, Natalie, Lilly, Sophie, and Jessica gathered in a tight circle and embraced each other. Some words were said but I didn’t hear what they were. What I witnessed was a true bonding moment and I suspect this will remain in their hearts forever.

Our School community is fortunate to have six wonderful students who will lead and assist in nurturing our community in 2025. Our new Principal Ms Natalie Charles will arrive at St Catherine’s next year with a strong team of willing and able student leaders led by our Co-Captains Rachel and Vinuki.
