District Hockey
Tuesday 4 June saw our St Catherine’s Year 6 District Hockey Team make their debut against Lauriston Girls’ School and Firbank Grammar School.
After two lunchtime training sessions, they were ready to take to the pitch and prove their mettle. For most, it was their first time playing field hockey, and it was great to see the enthusiasm and patience picking up new skills in a sport different to what they were used to.
Our first match was against Lauriston and it was an even test of skill for the first half. However, St Catherine’s soon found their rhythm and pushed the attack, with Olivia Telfer scoring a great goal, bringing the score to 1 – 0. We kept up the pressure but some strong defence from Lauriston kept us on our toes.
After a small break in between we then faced off against Firbank. With three points from the previous win our Team was keen to continue the momentum. Firbank proved a formidable opponent, scoring two quick goals. We were not to be shaken by this and a quick string of passes ended in Soraya Leos charging up the field and scoring a goal. With renewed energy, we managed to bring the score to 2 – 2, thanks to another quick break goal from Imogen Brownjohn. The whistle blew, ending the match and our games for the day.
Feeling very proud of themselves and overjoyed by the results the Team then sat down to watch Firbank play Lauriston. The match turned into a nail-biter as Lauriston held up the defence against Firbank, but ultimately lost, resulting in second place overall for St Catherine’s.
I would like to congratulate all of the girls who played in our Year 6 District Hockey Team! They showed amazing determination, sportswomanship, and teamwork.
Hopefully, we’ve found a few more future hockey players for years to come. A fantastic result all round!
