Year 6 Canberra Study Tour

In Week 3, our Year 6 students embarked on an unforgettable three-day Study Tour to Canberra, immersing themselves in the nation’s history, culture, and government. From the moment we touched down in our capital city, the days were filled with hands-on learning experiences, inspiring encounters, and opportunities to deepen friendships.

Our program began at the National Arboretum, where the girls worked together on an orienteering challenge while exploring amazing gardens and panoramic views. At the Australian War Memorial, students participated in the We Will Remember Them program, developing a deeper appreciation for the sacrifices made by Australian servicemen and women.

The group explored the High Court of Australia, learning about the role it plays in upholding our Constitution, before heading to Old Parliament House for an interactive program about leadership and democracy. At the Australian Institute of Sport, students saw athletes in training, including the national gymnastics team.

A visit to Government House was a highlight, with our Junior School Co-Captains honoured to sign the official guest book. The girls also enjoyed discovering the fascinating process of coin production at the Royal Australian Mint and journeying back in time at the National Dinosaur Museum.

Throughout the tour, the girls demonstrated curiosity, respect, and enthusiasm. They asked insightful questions, engaged with guides, and represented St Catherine’s with pride.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion, the Australian Government contributed funding to our school in the amount of $45 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.

What was your favourite part of the trip and what did you learn in Canberra?
