District Soccer

In Term 2, the Year 6 Sport Program has been abuzz with training and tryouts for a range of District Sports Carnivals. Throughout the process one thing is clear – St Catherine’s girls love their sport and want to represent our School on the sports field with perseverance and integrity.

The 2023 District Soccer Carnival, taking place at Kooyong Park on Wednesday 24 May, was certainly a testament to the efforts of the Year 6 Cohort in 2023.

Eleven, Year 6 girls represented St Catherine’s in a tough round-robin competition against Firbank, Genazzano and Sacré Coeur.

Coco Thomas was a strong, sturdy goalkeeper, receiving plenty of help from Miya Fei, Xin Yan (Vita) Wei, and fearless sweeper Carys Dreaver in defence. Siena Lane led the St Cath’s midfield, running hard in every game and never tiring. Sisters Stavroula (Voula) and Aleka Hronopoulos provided exceptional support. New student Chloe Downing showed great energy and improved during the Tournament. Forwards Clementine Abbott and Anna Roosenburg were ruthless in attack, scoring on many occasions. Most memorable was striker Emma Hessell‘s three goals scored against Genazzano.

This increase in our goal difference proved important as St Catherine’s went through to the finals in second place in their group! Whilst the Year 6 Team lost against eventual winners Loreto 2-0 in the Playoffs, the girls showed resilience in their final playoff game, drawing against Melbourne Girls to finish in equal third place.

Well done to all the girls involved.

District Netball

Last Wednesday 24 May, nine girls from Year 6 were selected to represent St Catherine’s in the Armadale District Netball Tournament.

The Team demonstrated unwavering commitment, resilience, and sportsmanship. Despite not securing any wins, their relentless effort and determination were evident in every game they played. The Team faced numerous challenges and strong teams throughout the day but continued to try their hardest, displaying true character and love for netball.

The nine girls selected to represent St Catherine’s were:

  • Alexandra Pitt
  • Isabella Wilkins
  • Grace Hoffmann
  • Imogen Herron
  • Isabelle Byrne
  • Olivia Bingham
  • Matilda (Milly) Cameron
  • Scarlett Bertalli
  • Teegan Gobel

A star performer was Matilda (Milly) Cameron, who displayed impressive defensive work all day long with multiple intercepts. Whilst the midcourt combination of Imogen Herron and Isabella Wilkins provided some excellent movement bringing the ball down the court.

Congratulations to all girls involved, it was a fantastic day and great to have parents come down to support!
