Year 5 have been discovering and researching Economics and Business as part of their Unit of Inquiry this semester.

To start the Unit, girls were asked to select a country of interest and research their economy. The research project is designed to give students an understanding of how economics and trade work around the world.

The investigation involved defining terms such as Gross Domestic Product (GDP), import, export, trade, human, capital, and natural resources. To finish the Unit, the girls will plan and present a mini-business.

The project involves conducting market research, creating business cards and a website, calculating profit and loss, and then presenting a display at the Year 5 Business Expo. The Business Expo is a day to remember for the Year 5 Cohort. They have an opportunity to showcase their creativity and have a lot of fun.

“We have learnt about profit, gain, loss, economy, and business. Soon, we will be opening and starting our own business, using our knowledge that was obtained during the HASS sessions. I have enjoyed learning about the different types of resources, companies, and marketing. These HASS sessions filled our brains with more education, they were also filled with fun social and independent activities.” Summer Pui

“In HASS at the moment, I am researching the country Canada. I have learnt that Canada is the second largest nation in the world with 38,526,760 people living there! Later, this term we are going to do a mini business. I am looking forward to making the things we are going to sell to raise money.” Emma Hessell

“I really enjoyed learning about trade, imports, and exports and how trading can help the economy and the countries. I think learning about business will be fun and interesting. I’m looking forward to learning about profit and setting up the Christmas Stall. I’m excited to see the behind the scenes of making a business.” Charlotte Parfit

“I absolutely loved our new HASS project and I’ve learnt a lot about business and earning money. I am also excited for the mini-business stalls because I’ve started a business before, and I loved the experience.” Imogen Herron
