Debating Matters because Ideas Matter

Another demanding debate with Special Guest Adjudicators!

For the debate held on Monday, teams were challenged by the proposition ‘That parents should give their children pocket money’. Adding to the excitement, the Captains of Debating and Public Speaking: Year 12 students Eloise Rudge and Lan-Tian Yen-West, accepted our invitation to be Guest Adjudicators. Tavia Anh Pham and Clara Barry were Chairperson and Timekeeper.

The Affirmative team: Shuao (Mia) Li, Jiali (Erena) Zhu, and Liana Lam, set the agenda and both teams cut to the chase very quickly.

The Affirmative team argued that in receiving pocket money, children become more savvy spenders and learn to save. The Negative team: Tara Pattison, Charlotte Roe, and Annika Gill, responded strongly, arguing that in receiving pocket money, children do not in fact learn the value of money and that being paid to do chores sets a bad example for adult life.

The Affirmative team won by two points. Best Speaker was awarded to Mia Li who had the line “Pocket money is the building block for adult self-sufficiency.”

Congratulations to all debaters. Both teams demonstrated great maturity of thought. They are all learning to think on their feet and offering strong rebuttals.

The next debate will take place after the Canberra Study Tour. Inspired by this trip, the debaters will take up the challenge of the proposition ‘That Australia needs a new flag.’
