Milestones Gala 125: Unplugged – Sophie Williams

Due to ongoing COVID restrictions, St Catherine’s School’s 2021 Gala Concert, Milestones 125, has been postponed to 2022 at the Melbourne Recital Centre.

However, the show must go on via…The Blue Ribbon! Each week performances and rehearsals from our talented Barbreck and Senior School students will be showcased.

Although nothing compares to the stage, we hope our School community enjoys the passion and talents of our musicians and performers digitally.

Year 12 student, Sophie Williams has been studying singing at St Catherine’s for six years.

Under the tutelage of Mrs Libby Choo, Sophie has achieved much, including an Honours for her Grade 6 AMEB exam in 2020. Sophie loves being on stage and has played several lead roles in St Catherine’s productions including Ellie in Freaky Friday and Lindy Chamberlain in Letters to Lindy.

We wish Sophie well as she prepares for her final VCE recital, where she will perform a range of repertoire in Italian, German and English from Baroque to present day.

Please enjoy Sophie’s performance of Green Finch and Linnet Bird from Stephen Sondheim’s harrowing musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, accompanied by Mrs Kate Denmead on piano. In this song Sophie plays Johanna, (Sweeney Todd’s daughter). Johanna sings from the window of her bedroom where she is being held prisoner by a corrupt judge. She wonders how the green finch and linnet bird can produce such beautiful songs when they are caged just like her.
