Year 4 – Early Explorers Wax Museum

This term, Year 4 have enjoyed researching about early explorers from the past 600 years of history. Their inquiry has taken them on a journey of learning about where and why their explorer travelled, and the impact they had on history. Explorers included Christopher Columbus, Ferdinand Magellan and Abel Tasman, to name a few.

Students were presented with the opportunity to explore how to research key facts and to target questions using different resources. During our lockdown they shared their research with their peers and then returned to School in the last week to present an exhibit of their research exploration in the form of a mini Wax Museum display to other year levels.

The experience offered the girls a wonderful opportunity to extend their research skills, work collaboratively with peers and use creative ways to present and demonstrate their understanding of the Age of Exploration.

Here are some of the comments from students about their learning, below.

“I enjoyed the experience, posing as my explorer and answering questions about my explorer. I learnt about Ferdinand Magellan and extended my knowledge about PowerPoint as well as Word.” Giselle (Gigi) Armstrong

“I enjoyed the wax museum so much, from the minute my teachers told me we would be completing a presentation for other year levels to see. I especially enjoyed the last couple of steps because I knew that we were so close to being able to share it. I loved when my first person came up to have a look at my display, as soon as they started walking towards me I got ready to unfreeze from my wax self and into my human self. I feel extremely grateful for the teachers for making this happen.” Coco Thomas

“I enjoyed that we got to dress up as our explorers and that we got to work with different people in the other class.” Chloe McMahon

“I enjoyed how we got to be creative with our outfits and make a question box. it was really fun answering the questions because it was a little bit hard to remember the answers. I loved the Explorers project Wax Museum because it was fun to dress up and meet new people. We all put a lot of effort into it and I loved it. I can’t wait to do it again.” Imogen Herron

“I loved the explorer wax museum project because I learnt a lot about how people discovered countries and goods such as spices. I thought it was fun because we got to dress up and pretend to be our explorer.” Isabella Wilkins
