While our Term 2 Sports season didn’t finish in the way we wanted, there is much to be proud of. Again, the St Catherine’s athletes have proved that they are capable of great teamwork and achieving success. See below for the Term 2 wrap up.

GSV Weekly Sport

AFL

For the first time, GSV held a Year 7 and 8 competition, with the St Catherine’s team challenging all opponents and learning a lot about the game. 2021 saw our Senior (Year 9-12) team produce the School’s most successful AFL season in history. After a tough round one loss to MGGS, our girls put in fantastic performances to defeat Sacre Coeur (41 to 4), Shelford (55 to 2) and MLC2 (80 to 0). The highlight of the season was the annual Huntingtower/Heyington Shield match against Lauriston. In front of a big crowd, the match ended in a nail-biting draw. Congratulations to Year 11 student Mikayla Lee who was voted best on ground. We look forward to seeing our footballers once again push for finals next year.

Hockey

Our highly talented Inter Hockey Team (2019 GSV Champions) set out to defend their title. After winning all five of the games played, the team had an unbelievable goal difference of +34! Disappointingly again, the girls missed their chance to play finals.

Water Polo

Working with Water Polo legends Michael ‘Macca’ McNeill and Jeanette Gunn, as well as former Water Polo Captain Thalia Barbayannis, our senior team once again proved to be one of the best in the pool. Big wins against Ivanhoe and MGGS, as well as a tough draw against MLC had the girls sitting atop their zone ladder when the season was suspended.

Netball

Our four Junior teams, five Intermediate teams and four Senior teams all loved being back on the court. The Junior A and B teams were particular stand outs, both with strong records and pushing for a spot in the finals.

GSV Carnival Sport

Cross Country

Led by our Head Athletics coaches Lloyd Knight and Susan Hobson, our runners put in a tough term of training, including a much-enjoyed Saturday morning run at The Tan. St Catherine’s was well represented at the Athletics Victoria Road Relays competition, with four of our teams finishing inside the top 10 schools in the state. Emma Peele (Year 7) was our fastest junior, running 8.24 on the 2.2km course and Mattea Demetriou (Year 9) was our fastest senior, running 11.34 on the 3km course.

While our girls didn’t get to compete at the GSV Championships, an outstanding team performance at the Preliminary Carnival saw them achieve a place in the Division 1 Carnival; a fantastic achievement.

See below for a summary of the Preliminary Carnival.

Junior Team

Our Junior Team finished 3rd overall at the Preliminary Carnival. Despite being their first ever GSV X-Country event, this team was unfazed, positive and extremely eager to tackle the race head on. Emma Peele (Year 7) was our fastest junior on the day, finishing in 6th place overall, in a time of 12.16 for the 3km course. Impressive pack running saw our top seven runners all finish within the front half of the field.

Intermediate Team

Our Intermediate Team finished 4th overall at the Preliminary Carnival. This team ran extremely well, working hard to support and push each other throughout the race. In an outstanding effort Mattea Demetriou (Year 9), finished 2nd overall in a time of 15.25 over the 4km course.

Senior Team

Our Senior Team finished 4th overall at the Preliminary Carnival. This experienced team had to dig deep to hold their nerve in a strong preliminary field. Sarah Marriott, current Australian representative rower was our fastest finisher, finishing 15th overall, in a time of 16.18 over the 4km course.

We look forward to commencing Term 3 sports after the break, with training for Soccer, Badminton and Track and Field all starting in Week 1. Swim Group, Strength and Conditioning and Water Polo Development Squad will also re-start.

Finally, the annual Cross Country Team ‘Lap of the Tan’ is being held at 8am on Saturday 19 June. We look forward to our runners have a final competitive ‘hit-out’ before the mid-year break.
