Mathematics Update – The Mathematics Team Challenge

At the end of Term 1, Year 8 students took part in a Mathematics Team Challenge.

The Mathematics Team Challenge is a competition that offers students the opportunity to tackle a variety of engaging mathematical activities while developing teamwork and communication skills. This competition aims to stimulate interest in Mathematics and creative problem solving by providing an opportunity for students to apply understanding, problem solving and reasoning skills to solve mathematical challenges.

Students were split into mixed ability groupings within their House groups. This presented girls an opportunity to work with other girls they have not worked with in the past as well as an opportunity to develop interpersonal and relational skills.

The Year 8s worked in pairs to complete a relay of questions, alternating with whom they worked with each time it was their turn to tackle a problem. While they were not working on a relay question, their task was to work through 10 difficult problems that could be contributed on by all members of the team.

Special mention to the Langley Templeton team of Nicola, Lauren, Ziqi and Callista for being the winning individual team. The winning House, with the overall high score, was Holmes Kilbride.
