Barbreck Update – Girls engaged and learning

As we approach the end of Term 1 it has been wonderful to see the girls engaged, learning and happy.

Parent-Teacher Meetings

It was a valuable afternoon and evening as parents met with teachers to discuss their daughter’s progress and wellbeing this Term. These meetings provide a wonderful opportunity to share information, learn more and make future plans. It was great being able to hold these face-to-face, strengthening the home-school partnership.

Ambassador Program for Years 5 and 6

This year, we have introduced the Ambassador Program which provides every girl the opportunity to develop her skills in a range of areas that are not included in the formal curriculum such as public speaking, leadership, service and citizenship, and team collaborations.

This year the girls will learn about:

  • Speaking at formal occasions:
    • Speaking at a lectern using a microphone
    • Introducing a guest speaker
    • Thanking a guest speaker
    • Accepting an award on behalf of the Team/School
  • Committees
    • The purpose of committees
    • Positions held
    • How decisions are made i.e. motions
    • Forming committees for specific purposes at School
  • Developing simple business plans to
    • carry out committee plans, and
    • fundraising activities for specific charities (Year 5) and gift to the School (Year 6)
    • improve planning, organisational and time management skills

This program enables girls to be active participants in decision-making processes and to see the processes evolve from initial ideas, through the planning phases and finally, the idea’s come to life. It offers girls the chance to not only own and voice an idea but see that their ideas can have real value within the Barbreck School community.

A further component of the Ambassador Program is the Alannah and Madeline Foundation eSmart Licence, giving the girls the skills to thrive in the digital world – being smart, safe and responsible when online.

Our aim is that after girls have participated in the two-year program, they will be confident public speakers, active within the School community, equipped with the skills necessary to work well within a team committed to carrying out well-planned and organised events and activities. These are skills that girls can carry with them and build on well into their future years.
