Rowing Geelong Regatta Overview

On Saturday 16 February 2019, our Junior and Intermediate rowers headed south to Geelong for the Rowing Geelong Regatta. This was the first regatta for the students in their selected crews and was a fantastic opportunity to set a benchmark for the weeks to come.

Our Junior squad raced in the morning session and continued to show improvement in their fitness and boat skills with seven of our nine Junior crews placing either 1st or 2nd in their heat and five crews either racing in the A Final or winning the B Final, placing them in the top five crews for their respective division.

These results were particularly promising given several members of the squad were affected by illness, requiring one crew to withdraw and three girls to step up and race with crews that were not their own to ensure all students were able to compete. Thank you very much to Olivia Bogdan (Year 9), Jessica Stuart (Year 9) and Lotte Pusey (Year 9). Your cooperation and sportsmanship is both admirable and much appreciated.

The Intermediate squad followed in the afternoon. The cross headwind made conditions on the Barwon slightly more challenging but this did not faze our crews who demonstrated both fitness and finesse. A particular mention must be made to all Intermediate coxswains, who did a phenomenal job of keeping their crews on course despite the conditions. Thank you and well done to Zara Carter (Year 10), Sophie Gorton (Year 10) and Molly Robertson (Year 10).

Congratulations to the Year 10 Cross who won their respective division – Sophie Williams, Bridget Vogel-Paul, Ellexi Fulton, Tamsin Sleigh and Sophie Gorton.

Our Junior and Intermediate rowers will compete at two more regattas prior to racing at the Head of the Schoolgirls Regatta. This presents an opportunity for all crews to continue to improve to ensure they are the ‘best they can be’ come 17 March.

Keep up the great work girls and go St Cath’s!
