Barbreck Book Week 2024

Barbreck Book Week celebrations were a wonderful and vibrant tribute to the magic of reading and literature. The celebrations included a book-themed performance group, author visits, Lunchtime Lucky Reading, Buddy reading, and a fun competition, all highlighting the magic of books.

Our Barbreck students also engaged with the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) shortlisted books and voted for their favourites, with results announced at the special Book Week Assembly. The celebrations encompassed the literary achievements recognised by the CBCA and encouraged a deeper connection with books and reading among our students. Giving the students the opportunity to become judges and vote for their favourite books from the CBCA shortlist gave them a sense of agency and involvement in the festivities. More information about the CBCA winning books can be found here.

The visits from award-winning authors Emma Bowd and Nova Weetman were also highlights of the week. Author visits have numerous benefits for our students, including sparking enthusiasm for reading and writing, enhancing literacy skills, and fostering creativity. These interactions make literature more engaging and relatable, as students gain insights into an author’s creative process and receive real-world connections between their classroom learning and professional writing. Additionally, meeting an author can boost students’ confidence, inspire them to explore new genres, and create lasting positive associations with books. Overall, author visits enrich students’ educational experiences and cultivate a lifelong love of literature.

Thursday was the biggest day of Book Week with Book Week Dress Up Day and Book Week Assembly, providing students and staff with opportunities to express their creativity and imagination through their fun and colourful costumes. It was a fantastic celebration of the School community’s collective enthusiasm for reading. The parades, the announcement of book winners, the singing and dancing, and the presentation of competition results were all delightful moments, fostering a sense of community and collaboration among students, staff, and parents.

Many thanks to our Year 6 Library Co-Captains, Emily Wang, Chloe Wang, and Elva Zhang for presenting the Book Week assembly and for their assistance throughout Book Week. Thank you also to our staff, students, and parents for their enthusiastic support of Book Week.

Overall, the Junior School Book Week celebrations were happy and joyful, reflecting our community’s deep commitment to nurturing a love for reading and applauding literature, making this magical Book Week one to remember.
