Developing a Sense of Wellbeing in Our Youngest Learners

It is important that we as educators provide opportunities for the children to develop a sense of wellbeing from a young age.

“Wellbeing includes good physical health, feelings of happiness, satisfaction and successful social functioning.” – Early Years Learning Framework for Australia.

A child’s wellbeing influences the way in which they interact with their environment. A strong sense of wellbeing provides children with confidence and optimism to reach their learning potential.

Learning Outcome 3: Children have a strong sense of wellbeing.
3.1       Children become strong in their social and emotional wellbeing.
3.2       Children take increasing responsibility for their own health and physical wellbeing.

The educators at St Catherine’s Early Learning Centre work towards building warm, trusting relationships with the children, and provide a predictable and safe learning environment. These conditions support the child to develop a strong sense of wellbeing.

There is a correlation between wellbeing and resilience. Children with a strong sense of wellbeing have the capacity to cope with day to day challenges. The readiness to persevere when faced with unfamiliar and challenging learning situations creates the opportunity for success and achievement. Children are supported to become more resilient to everyday challenges or disappointments.

The St Catherine’s ELC educators work towards building trusting relationships with the children to support them in developing a strong sense of wellbeing.

The children are encouraged to take increasing responsibility for their self-help skills and basic routines. This promotes a sense of independence and confidence. As the children’s fine motor and gross motor skills develop, this provides them with the foundation for growing independence and the satisfaction of being able to do things for themselves.

Learning about healthy lifestyles, including nutrition, personal hygiene, physical fitness, emotions and social relationships is integral to wellbeing. These opportunities for learning are embedded in our early learning programs. A child’s physical wellbeing impacts their ability to concentrate, cooperate and learn. Good nutrition is also essential to healthy living and enables children to be active participants in their play and learning. We promote and encourage healthy food choices with the children.

The St Catherine’s ELC educators aim to build a strong sense of wellbeing in the children.

As educators, we acknowledge the importance of building a strong sense of wellbeing in the children from a young age. This supports the child to reach their learning potential and lays the foundation for them to live successful lives.

Safety Around Our School

We encourage all members of our School community to be vigilant with safety when parking and driving through the streets around our School. Please avoid turning into driveways as this is a safety risk to pedestrians. We also ask that you do not park across the School driveway as this blocks access for emergency services. This area must be kept clear at all times.

We ask you to please use the School crossing with the children in order to cross the road in a safe manner. The children are asked to hold an adult’s hand as they are walking along the footpaths to and from the School. Please do not allow the children to run ahead. It is important that these safety procedures are role modelled to the children.

We know that you will understand that safety is our highest priority. It is therefore imperative that we have cooperation from all families to ensure that the pedestrian areas around our School are safe for all at these busy times of day.

2020 Prep Transition Program

Our ELC and Prep programs are strongly connected to ensure continuity of learning as our children transition from ELC to Junior School. Planning is well underway to ensure a seamless transition that delivers a progressive learning experience.

Our Prep Transition program will commence with an appointment with Mrs Karen McArdle, Head of Junior School. During this time, children and parents will have an opportunity to find out more about the learning environment, preparing your daughter for Prep and structure of school (Our Admissions team will be in touch with you to arrange your appointment). This will be followed by our Orientation Program commencing in Term 3 where our young learners will have an exciting opportunity to experience first-hand, life in our new Junior School.

We look forward to your daughter continuing her learning journey in our new purpose-built Junior School and encourage you to contact Ms Jeanette Boehm, Registrar should you wish to arrange a personal tour of the Junior School or find out more about the transition program.
