Interschool Chess Tournament

Interschool Chess Tournament

On Monday 6 August, St Catherine’s School participated in a secondary interschool chess tournament held at Marcellin College. A total of 25 teams competed in the event which was organised by Chess Victoria. St Catherine’s entered three teams in the competition.

Our overall performance in the tournament was pleasing. The Gold Team was one of the top 10 scoring teams and the second highest scoring girls school, finishing only narrowly behind Presbyterian Ladies College.

Our Silver and Bronze Teams both finished ahead of five other schools, despite the fact that all of the students playing in these two teams were participating in their first interschool chess tournament.

The outstanding performance of our students enabled St Catherine’s to qualify five places for the Chess Victoria Secondary Girls State Finals, which will be held in October.

A special congratulations is due to Lillian Lu (Year 9) who won six of her seven games and was the highest scoring girl in the tournament.

Well done to the following students who participated in the tournament:

Year 10: Romy Cantwell, Millicent Cottrell, Penelope Drummond, Millie Fraser-Smith, Sophie Garrett, Laura Glaspole, Zara Gracanin, Isabella McDonald, Jennifer Madgwick, Zoe Meggitt, Ruby Morton, Elanur Ozdemir, Serena Sitch and Isobel Tanner.

Year 9: Lillian Lu and Tiffany Pham.

Year 8: Paula Chen.

Year 7: Emma Gregory and Persephone Antippa.
